Here you will find some of my thoughts, opinions, ideas and experiences. It is just a collection of articles about all things related to the IT industry.

I often find myself spending a lot of my time organising, or atleast trying to get myself organised. I have just finished a very busy few months with several projects on the go at once and I have been left with several very full email project mailboxes. Trying to keep track of who needs to communicate with who is a challenge, but as with all things, the ability to multitask grows with practice.I have read many books on personal development and the idea that effective people are very good at managing time. I agree, to an extent, but there also…
There has been a huge push in the last 12 months towards 'Cloud Technology'. What this means is that organisations large and small are moving more of the their data and core infrastructure requirements to hosted solutions. I have to admit that adopting this technology has made a huge difference to how I run my own company, and I am of the opinion that most small businesses would do well to consider some of the benefits. Generally, 99.9% SLA with all the services running on fully redundant hardware. A more flexible way to make access to core business services easier…
I often wonder how effective the ICT curriculum we use in our schools is relevant to the real world. In our modern day we have become consumed by applications, Facebook, Twitter and this expands deeper still when you look at the Smart Phone market. The question is now whether we have focused on teaching applications and less on core ICT. For example, I was recently asked to setup a Serif product for a web design course. We didn't have a license for this so it was priced up as a potential order. After some discussion is was decided that we…
I am becoming more of a fan of Google all the time. I think they create opportunities for people. They support coders with projects, one of these being a favourite of mine, Blender. If you spend some time on Google Code there is a wealth of interesting development going on in all areas of IT. The Pyrit project is of interest to me as this is attempting to provide tools to recover WPA and WPA2 preshared keys using modern day computing power inheritant in Graphics cards.Further digging around Google Code showcases masses of Open Source Software hosted by Google giving…
If you are unaware, Google now offer a cloud based communication solution for Business, Education and Non-Profit organisations called Google Apps. This platform offers email, document management, chat and site tools all in a subscription based package. I decided to migrate to the platform myself in August last year as I was moving to an Android based platform for most of my business tools and it seemed to make sense. There are also some considerable savings to be made when you compare this to an Exchange deployment. When I looked at the specification I would need for my Exchange server…
Most people are slowing coming round to the idea of upgrading to the latest version of the Micosoft operating systems and this is no bad thing. Lets be honest, Vista was awful. I remember installing this on my laptop and it ground to a halt. I was so disappointed and like so many others downgraded vowing to consider my Redmond choices more carefully. It created damage to Microsofts reputation and I personally feel many poor assumptions where made about the current state of hardware. My quad core PC with 8GB and a dedicated graphics card handled it well, but this…
In an era of budget crisis and wondering whether jobs will continue to flow, we all have to look at our spending. Microsoft technology is excellent, and despite the occasional spanner in the works, reliable......but this comes at a price. Over the last few years I have watched the developments of IT strucutures within business and education adapt. One of the main reasons for this is the competition Open Source Software brings to the industry. Most of the internet is already running on Open Source solutions, linux and apache underpin a lot of what we do. Wordpress (and my personal…
